A lock that's frozen solid is one of those winter problems that tends to happen at the worst possible moment — early morning, when you're already late, in the cold. Most frozen locks can be dealt with quickly if you approach them correctly. Here's what actually works, what doesn't, and what to do if the lock stays frozen.
Why Locks Freeze
Locks freeze when moisture gets into the mechanism and the temperature drops below zero. Water can enter through the keyhole directly, through microscopic gaps around the cylinder, or through condensation inside the mechanism. When it freezes, it can prevent the key from entering at all, prevent it from turning once inserted, or in more severe cases cause internal components to seize entirely.
Locks that have been recently lubricated with an oil-based product are more prone to freezing because oil-based lubricants attract moisture and can themselves thicken in cold temperatures.
What Works
De-icer Spray
Purpose-made lock de-icer is the most effective solution. It's available from most petrol stations, hardware stores, and supermarkets, and works quickly by lowering the freezing point of the water inside the lock. Squirt it directly into the keyhole, wait a few seconds, and try the key gently. Keep a can in your car rather than in the house — that way you can access it even when you can't get in.
Hand Warmth
Cupping your hands around the cylinder and holding them there for a minute or two transfers enough heat to thaw a lightly frozen mechanism. It takes longer than de-icer but works in most cases and costs nothing.
A Warm Key
Heating your key with a lighter or match and then inserting it carefully can help thaw the lock from inside. Be careful not to overheat the key — it should be warm, not hot enough to burn. Repeat a few times if needed, allowing the heat to transfer through the key into the mechanism.
A Hairdryer
If you have access to a power socket near the door, a hairdryer on a low to medium heat directed at the lock for a minute or two is effective. Keep the heat moderate — very high heat applied directly to a uPVC door or composite door for an extended period can cause damage to the door finish.
What Doesn't Work — and What to Avoid
Boiling water — pouring boiling water on a frozen lock seems logical but risks thermal shock damage to the cylinder, and the water that doesn't evaporate immediately can refreeze and make the problem worse.
WD-40 — commonly reached for as a general-purpose fix, WD-40 is a water displacer rather than a proper lock lubricant. While it can help in the short term with a frozen lock, it leaves a residue that attracts dirt and moisture — and makes the lock more prone to freezing again. Use it only as a last resort and follow up with a proper PTFE lubricant when conditions allow.
Forcing the key — if the lock is frozen solid, applying heavy force to the key risks snapping it in the lock. Apply only gentle pressure and stop if the key isn't moving.
If you're locked out and nothing is working: Call a locksmith. A frozen lock that has been forced or that has a broken key inside it becomes significantly more complicated to deal with. If gentle methods haven't worked after a few minutes, stop and call for help rather than making the situation worse.
Preventing a Frozen Lock
The best approach is to stop the lock freezing in the first place:
- Use a dry PTFE or graphite lubricant on your external locks before cold weather sets in. Dry lubricants don't attract moisture the way oil-based products do, and they help keep the mechanism moving freely even in cold temperatures
- Fit a letterbox draught excluder or keyhole cover on your front door. A keyhole cover is a small flip-cover fitted over the keyhole that prevents direct moisture entry. They're cheap and very effective at reducing freeze incidents
- Check that water isn't collecting around your door threshold — standing water near the base of the door can wick upward and contribute to moisture in the lock during freeze-thaw cycles
- Keep a can of de-icer in your car — accessible even when you can't get into the house, and useful for car locks too
When the Lock Needs Replacing
A lock that freezes regularly despite being properly lubricated and protected may have a cracked or damaged cylinder that's allowing water ingress beyond what normal prevention can address. In that case, a cylinder replacement is the practical solution — a new, properly sealed cylinder with a dry lubricant applied on fitting should resist freezing reliably.
