Lock bumping is a technique that uses a specially cut key and a sharp impact to open many standard pin tumbler locks without the correct key. It received significant media attention in the UK in the mid-2000s and again in the 2010s, and it's a legitimate security concern — though it's worth understanding how real the threat is in practice and what actually protects against it.
How Lock Bumping Works
A bump key is a key cut to the maximum depth on every tooth — a specific pattern that works on a class of lock rather than a specific lock. When the bump key is inserted one position short of fully in, and then struck sharply (bumped) inward with a mallet or heavy object while simultaneously applying rotational pressure, the impact causes all the driver pins inside the lock to jump momentarily. In that fraction of a second, if the rotational pressure is correctly timed, the lock can be turned before the pins fall back into the blocking position.
The technique requires some practice but is learnable, and bump keys are straightforward to make or obtain. The attack is fast — a practised person can open a vulnerable lock in a matter of seconds — and leaves little evidence of forced entry.
Which Locks Are Vulnerable
Standard pin tumbler locks — the most common type used in Yale-style nightlatches and many basic euro cylinders — are the primary target. A significant proportion of locks fitted to UK homes over the years fall into this category.
Locks with additional security features are resistant or immune to bumping:
- Anti-bump cylinders have pins with additional features — mushroom pins, spool pins, or serrated pins — that catch and resist the momentary jumping action that bumping relies on
- Disc detainer locks use a completely different mechanism with no pins to jump
- High-security cylinders meeting TS007 3-star or British Standard ratings are tested against bump attacks as part of their certification
How Common Is It in Practice?
This is where the honest answer is important. Lock bumping is a real technique, but in the UK it is significantly less common as a method of domestic burglary than lock snapping. Most residential burglaries involve forced entry through kicking the door, breaking glass, or exploiting an unlocked window — not sophisticated lock manipulation techniques. Lock snapping on euro cylinders remains the dominant method of cylinder attack on uPVC and composite doors.
This doesn't mean bump attacks don't happen — they do — but the probability of your home being targeted this way is relatively low compared to more opportunistic methods. The value of understanding bump attacks is in making an informed decision about your lock specification, not in significant alarm.
The reassuring fact: If your lock already meets TS007 3-star for anti-snap protection, it almost certainly also provides anti-bump protection, because the same spool and mushroom pin features that resist snapping also resist bumping. You don't need separate protection against each — a properly certified cylinder addresses both.
What Protects Against Lock Bumping
- TS007 3-star cylinders — tested and certified against a range of attack methods including bumping. This is the recommended upgrade for any external door
- High-security restricted key systems — where keys can only be duplicated by authorised suppliers and the cylinders have enhanced security features
- Additional door security — a door chain or hinge bolts add physical layers that mean bypassing the cylinder doesn't automatically mean the door opens
- Security lighting and visible deterrents — bump attacks require time and some noise. Properties that are well-lit, overlooked, or that show signs of active occupation are less attractive targets regardless of lock type
