Locked Out of Your House? Here's What to Do

Being locked out of your home is one of those situations that goes from mildly annoying to genuinely stressful very quickly — especially if it's late, cold, or you've got children with you. The good news is that most lockouts are resolved faster than people expect. Here's what to do, in the right order, to get back inside as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Step 1: Take a Breath and Check the Obvious

It sounds patronising, but a surprising number of lockouts are resolved in the first two minutes by checking things people overlook in the panic of realising they can't get in. Before anything else:

  • Check every door — front, back, side, and any garage door that connects to the house
  • Check every accessible window, particularly on the ground floor
  • Check your pockets, bag, and car — keys turn up in the bottom of bags more often than you'd think

If it's safe to do so and a window is open, you may be able to reach in and open a door. Don't attempt anything at height or anything that puts you at risk of a fall.

Step 2: Call Someone Who Has a Spare Key

If you live with someone, call them first — they may be closer than you think or able to leave work. If you've given a spare key to a family member, neighbour, or friend, now's the time to use it. It's also worth keeping your letting agent's out-of-hours number in your phone if you rent — they may hold a spare.

If no one has a spare key, or they can't get to you within a reasonable time, move on to step three.

Step 3: Call a Local Locksmith

A professional locksmith is the safest, quickest, and often cheapest way to resolve a lockout. A good locksmith will use non-destructive entry techniques to open your door without damaging the lock or frame, meaning you're no worse off than when you started — and in most cases you'll be back inside within minutes of them arriving.

When you call, give them as much information as you can: the type of door (uPVC, composite, timber), the type of lock, and your location. This helps them arrive prepared and give you a more accurate price upfront.

Important: Be wary of locksmiths who advertise extremely low call-out prices — particularly "from £39" or "from £49" — and then significantly inflate the bill on arrival. This is a well-known tactic in the industry. A reputable locksmith will give you a clear, honest price before anyone sets off. If they won't quote, don't book.

What You Should Never Do

There are a few things people try when locked out that either don't work or make the situation worse:

  • Don't try to pick the lock yourself — modern locks are specifically designed to resist this, and you're more likely to damage the lock than open it
  • Don't break a window — the cost of replacing glass is almost always more than calling a locksmith, and you're left with a security risk while you wait for the repair
  • Don't force the door — this can damage the frame, the lock, and the door itself, turning a simple lockout into a much more expensive repair job
  • Don't try to remove the door hinges — modern external doors are fitted with hinge bolts specifically to prevent this

What Happens When the Locksmith Arrives

A locksmith will assess the door and lock before doing anything. In most cases, non-destructive entry is possible — this means opening the lock using specialist tools without drilling or damaging anything. The method depends on the lock type, the door type, and the condition of the hardware.

If non-destructive entry isn't possible — for example, if the lock mechanism has failed rather than you simply being locked out — the locksmith will explain why and talk through the options before proceeding. Any additional work or cost should be agreed with you first.

After You're Back Inside

Once you're back in, it's worth taking five minutes to think about how to avoid the same situation happening again:

  • Give a spare key to someone you trust who lives nearby
  • Consider a key safe — a secure, wall-mounted box that holds a spare key and opens with a combination code. These are inexpensive and far safer than hiding a key under a plant pot
  • If your lock felt stiff or difficult before the lockout, get it looked at — a failing mechanism can eventually leave you locked out from the inside as well as the outside
